Make a Microloan for 11-yr old Geoffrey's Health!

This loan has been repaid in full!

First Posted On: March 10, 2009

Name: Geoffrey

Age: 11 years old

Location: Scotland, United Kingdom

Diagnosis: Autism (low-functioning)

Loan Sought: $800 [~585 UK pounds]

Loan Needed For: One year's worth of probiotics (48.75 UK pounds/bottle x 12 months)

Repayment Terms: One lump sum in April 2010

Other Notes: Geoffrey has had low-functioning autism since the age of 2 and was diagnosed at the age of 3. (Click HERE for a very detailed history.) His family has been doing biomedical treatments since then (for the past 8 years) and has "done everything we can afford," including the gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diet, sugar-free/MSG-free diet, supplements, probiotics, enzymes, and several consults with doctors. They have an HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen treatment) chamber at their home (photo HERE). They have not tried chelation (heavy metals removal) yet because "he is not healthy enough" to start. The family would like to have the assistance of a gastroenterologist who specializes in autistic children, such as the Thoughtful House in Texas, but the cost to travel there plus continue and maintain treatment is prohibitive, and similar resources are not available in the UK. Geoffrey's family is interested in trying stem cell therapy and have heard other families have had good results with this. A quote from Germany for stem cell therapy was $30,000 (USD).

Geoffrey's family is planning to establish a charity in the UK that would help fund biomedical and stem cell treatments for families of children with autism. The cost required to establish such an organization would take away from the family's ability to purchase needed items for Geoffrey. This Lend4Health loan for a year's supply of Geoffrey's probiotics is an equivalent cost to that which it will cost for the family to establish their charity. As such, this loan will "free up" the funds needed to start their charity.

Geoffrey's dad, Angus, recently started a blog to track Geoffrey's story. The blog also has a "Donate" button for anybody interested in helping the family pursue further treatments for Geoffrey. Click HERE for a link to their blog.

Special Note: Geoffrey is one of the "MMR 10" Access to Justice children in the UK.

Make a Microloan for 3-yr old Jonathan's Health!

This loan has been repaid in full!

First Posted On: February 28, 2009

Name: Jonathan ("Boogie")

Age: 3 years old

Location: Florida

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $475

Loan Needed For: Travel expenses to the next DAN! doctor appointment. (Dr. Levinson in Miami, Florida)

Repayment Terms: One lump sum in February 2010.

Other Notes: Jonathan's mom, Kitty, writes: "Jonathan rocks, what else can a mom say! He's a wonderful kid, we've been blessed to have him in our lives. He's taught me so much and he's only three! He was a typical regressive autistic child, he had some words and lost them at eighteen months. He's always had gut issues, but since we're doing SCD [the Specific Carbohydrate Diet] he's improved unbelievably! We're so happy that he's doing physically better in many ways, but now we want him MENTALLY back! I miss my son! Since his diagnosis we've taken every thing we have and put it into him. We're trying all aspects, biomedical, therapeutic, dietary. This loan would be to cover the cost of going to see our DAN! doctor. We'd like to actually see the doctor that is making such a difference in my child's life." (The family has done phone consults with Dr. Levinson so far.)

Special Notes: Jonathan was the very first loan recipient we had on Lend4Health, in June 2008 [click HERE]. That loan was used for his food sensitivity test. It was fully repaid (on time), so the family is eligible to request this second loan. Click HERE to listen to Jonathan's mom, Kitty, interviewed about her experiences with autism on Blog Talk Radio from February 11, 2009.

Reference Provided By: No references needed since this is the family's second loan, and they are in good standing on Lend4Health.

June 16, 2009: Update from Jonathan's mom:

Our visit to Dr. Levinson!

The trip went smoother than expected. We rented a car with part of the loan, we asked for a full size sedan, we got a very cool magnum wagon. The kids LOVED that, when Jonathan saw it he said “vroom, vroom”. It was a relief for us, to not have to worry about breaking down in an unfamiliar city with two small children. So we got the car and got on the road. The kids took the ride very well. We packed plenty of toys and snacks and we stopped at nearly every rest stop. At one rest stop little David got ATTACKED by ants, he got at least fifteen ant bites. In a moment of mommy intuition I packed hydrocortisone in my purse and a quick application possibly saved us a trip to the Miami ER.

We found the hotel pretty easily; parking in Miami is twenty-five dollars a day! The hotel was nice but not great for small children. The hotel was right off the beach; the atmosphere was interesting, very urban beach-city. We reserved that particular place because they had cribs and a kitchen and it was close to the DAN doctor’s office. We needed a kitchen in case we needed to cook for them since they’re both on GFCF/SCD (minus IGG allergies) diets (yeah I know it’s a mouth full). I guess I was nervous about this because I cooked at least a week worth of food for them. So for them all we had to do was pop their food into the microwave. We thought we’d cook for us but the kitchen was a little un-balanced, it had plates, silverware and bowls but no PANS. So we had microwave cuisine too, lol. Jonathan got to sleep in the humongous, luxurious hotel bed since they didn’t have a crib for us after all. The bedroom had the least amount of breakables. Dave and I slept on the double pull out from the couch, that was fun. By time we put them down they were exhausted and so were we.

We were right on time for our first “in person” DAN doctor appointment. The office was homey and comfortable. We watched a movie while we waited, and the kids tried to tear down a large art work tree hung in the waiting room. The kids were great for the first five or so seconds of the appointment. Dr. Levinson asked someone for more toys and discussed Jonathan's latest set of lab results with us. It turns out somehow Jonathan has lead in his blood, which is very scary! Jonathan and David were fascinated by Dr. Levinson’s paperweight and sculpture. The sculpture is an abstract and I think because of the curves Jonathan kept calling it a dolphin (which is one of the animals he loves). Dr. Levinson said “it’s whatever he wants it to be”. Jonathan also said hello to Dr. Levinson which I have to admit, I thought was very cool. We also did some blood test while we there, we’ve gotten the same blood work done at other labs three, yes three times, and they kept screwing it up by mishandling the sample. I’m so glad we got that done properly I was about to physically harm some Phlebotomists! The last thing we did was a challenge test; this test is to check for heavy metals within the tissues. The nurse gave him an IV of a chelating agent after drawing his blood and we tried to distract him with SCD cookies and the Disney CARS movie. He took it pretty well, daddy does the holding and mommy sits there and looks faint and little David flirts with the nurse. So after that we pick up our supplements, lab results and kiddos and pack up to go home.

The drive back was a bit more stressful but not unbearable. The toughest part was collecting all Jonathan’s urine for six hours for the challenge test. I’ve seen enough gas station bathrooms to last a lifetime but we did get enough for the tests and should be getting the result soon. We also had to find a place on the road to feed them, which is impossible on their diet. So we went to McDonalds and brought in their food, luckily the workers didn’t give us any trouble.

And now, we’re home and happy to be there. Our town is no Miami and that’s part of what I like about it. Yet still, I’m so glad to have made the trip, so many important things have come out from it. It was great to put faces to names. To see the people who are paving the road to Jonathan’s recovery. I want to thank everyone who loaned even ONE dollar, that one dollar helped us make this trip! The trip is part of the larger journey of Jonathan’s recovery and hence his and our advances are yours as well.

Thank you from the bottom of our ever deepening hearts

Kitty, Dave, Jonathan and little David

April 12, 2010: The lump-sum repayment due on this loan (due February 15, 2010) has been marked past-due. Kitty has contacted Lend4Health to say that she still intends to repay the loan and that she is planning to write an update for her lenders.

April 25, 2010: Partial repayment of $25 received. Remaining amount due is $450.

April 25, 2010: Update from Kitty: "I'm so sorry that we haven't paid back our loan, no one could be more grateful than us, trust me. I've delayed in even writing this because I've been trying to justify our lateness and I don't have a definitive cause. What can I say, life has gotten in our way. Over that last six months Dave got laid off from his job of six years. I had to go back to work full time and then some. We've had three cars go Ka-boom. Jonathan has needed two new specialist doctors, with a third on the way. We're just strapped for cash and time. My days off are spent in doctors offices and catching up with my children. Jonathan is creeping closer to five everyday which terrifies me. He is doing well and making good progress everyday but of course that progress didn't start until he'd fallen FAR behind. Please forgive us, we are truly struggling right now. I'm going to pay 25$ each week until this is paid off. I'm sorry about the way it will look. I just know we won't have large sums of cash ANYTIME soon but I cannot let this linger any longer.

Sincerely
Kitty"

July 8, 2010: Partial repayment of $25 received. Remaining amount due is $425.

August 22, 2010: Partial repayment of $25 received. Remaining amount due is $400. Note: This repayment was made as a gift from an anonymous member of the Lend4Health community.

October 9, 2010: Partial repayment of $5 received. Remaining amount due is $395. Note: This repayment was made as a gift from an anonymous member of the Lend4Health community.
February 23, 2012: Full amount due of $395 received. This loan has been repaid in full!
Thank you letter from Jonathan's mom, Kitty (written 2/13/12):
Dear Lend4Health lenders,

I’m so happy to be writing this letter. I FINALLLLLLLY paid off our loan. First off I want to apologize for it taking so long. The guilt about this has been eating away at me. I want more than anything the repaid money to go to help other children. I KNOW there are too many being diagnosed everyday for anyone one person to help. Knowing our family troubles may be holding someone else’s child up from recovery grieved more than anything else. I don’t have a lot of excuses. Our life just got in the way. We had to move, twice. We took on a car payment to get Jonathan to and from Chelation, his special school, and other treatments and therapies. Autism has turned out to be more expensive than we anticipated. On a positive note, I would like to report that after all this time we are nearly finished with Chelation and THANK GOD for that. Jonathan is a different kid without the lead and mercury in his body. We only have approximately four to five Chelation treatments left. I can’t wait to see the full results. He is doing the most awesome things every day. He has a very wide and varied amount of interests. It ranges from Godzilla, transformers, reptiles, spiders to Bakugan (sometimes it’s a bit hard to keep up). We even recently had his FIRST ever updated Individual education plan (aka IEP) at school. In short that means he is learning to read, to write to count, things every child should do. He has the most wonderful eyes and looks at you frequently with them. I was recently reminded of the time when he couldn’t say “good night mommy” and cried a tear (or two or maybe more, who’s counting anyway). Those days are long gone. He will have a conversation with you, again it may be about Godzilla but I also get “goodnight mommy” at the end of the day. “Good night mommy” is worth all the Godzilla talk in the world. Lend4Health helped get us there, helped us start Chelation and helped him to come back to us. So thank you all for having faith in us, for not forgiving our loan.
Lots of Love
Kitty, Dave, Jonathan and little David <

Make a Microloan for 8-yr old Tatum's Health!

This loan has been repaid in full!

First Posted On: February 19, 2009

Name: Tatum

Age: 8 years old

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $670 [reduced on 3/23/09 from original amount of $1,500]

Loan Needed For: Four tests requested by Tatum's DAN! [Defeat Autism Now!] doctors (Dr. Georgia Davis and Dr. David Adams through the Autism Solution Center in Cordova, Tennessee). These tests were done in November 2008 and now need to be repeated to check for changes. (1) ION Profile with Amino Acid 40 (Pediatric); (2) Neopterin/Biopterin Profile; (3) IgG4 Food Antibodies (90 Antigens); and (4) GI Effects - Stool.

UPDATE FROM TATUM'S MOM 3/23/09:

Things were not going well with Tatum's biomedical intervention for the past 6 weeks. Lots of issues, but mainly boiled down to the fact that when we started the probiotics it exacerbated the gut issues rather than correcting them. We had a phone conference with Dr. Davis and followed up with the recommended supplements and the stool test to decide what should be the next step of treatment. So with this change in treatment plan, our amount needed has decreased significantly (since there is no point in re-running many of the tests at this time).

(1) Telephone call with Dr. Davis: $279.00
(2) Supplements $145.50 (Nu-Thera/Everyday Companion $27.00, Pro-DHA $36.00, Super nu-thera $74.50, Taurine $8.00)
(3) Doctor's Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology X 2: $245.00

Repayment Terms: 18 months ($37.22/month)

Other Notes: Tatum's mom, Heather, writes, "I knew from the beginning that something was very different about Tatum (As a pediatric OT [occupational therapist] I knew at the very least, we had some sensory integration issues). She has struggled with delayed language, poor articulation, stuttering, and behavior issues. At the age of 2 she earned the nickname "Stitch" after the Disney character (alien created for destruction) due to the fact that their speech patterns were similar and she was in non-stop motion destroying everything in her path. Despite all of this, I had a difficult time obtaining a diagnosis for her.

Our first diagnosis was ADHD at age 5. I thought something more was going on, so I pursued further testing, and she was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at age 6. She has since been diagnosed with Autism/Aspergers and found to have subclinical seizures.

She has a very high IQ but could not tolerate the school environment. By last spring she was completely withdrawn, and we lived life trying to recover from or brace ourselves for the next meltdown. This is why I decided to quit my full time job to care for her (I work every weekend to pay our bills). As a single parent, this was an extremely difficult decision. Even with the sacrifices, it is a decision that I do not regret. I saw a lot of her agitation and anxiety melt away, but we still had such a long way to go. Along with our daily home activities, she receives OT and speech therapy.

Over the last year, her articulation has improved from < 3 year old level to > 4 year old level. She seeks out me or her sister to play with at home (a big change from the kid that spent hours lining magnetix up in her closet). Since beginning biomedical treatment, we have been able to decrease her prescription medicines, and she is beginning to play spontaneously with other kids.

These funds will allow us to continue to target the biomedical interventions for Tatum."

Special Note: Heather has a blog called "Team Beautiful." Read it HERE. She learned about Lend4Health through Charlie's mom, Jeanne, who writes about Lend4Health frequently on her blog, "Charlie in Wonderland" (read it HERE). The two have also connected through the Autism Solution Center, where Tatum is a patient and where Jeanne volunteers.

Hi Tori, I enjoyed listening to you a couple of weeks ago! Thank you for all that you do! Things were not going well with Tatum's biomedical intervention for the past 6 weeks. March 18, 2009: Loan of $388 sent to Jodene via PayPal.

April 13, 2009: Update from Jodene: "We completed the two tests thanks to Lend4 Health, and are anxiously awaiting the results. I will keep you posted when I get them. Jaden did some new stuff this week, I'm not sure what changed, but he actually hugged my leg from behind and said "I love you," then ran off. I'm still shocked, because he is mostly non-verbal, unless we use a reinforcer and request. He did it again in the car yesterday! ... He does have a few new friends, that he is starting to interact with much like a NT [neuro-typical] child. The stims also went down this weekend. In addition to this, I learned Jaden is advanced in many things more so then other NT classmates. All these changes are so exciting. I'm optimistic another recovery is on the horizon and looking forward to new things."

April 30, 2009: 1st repayment installment received. Amount was $64.67; it was one day early.

April 30, 2009: Update on Jaden: "I got Jaden's Metobolic results today, but I don't really understand them. The comments said things like "possible diabetic, and toxicity, and recommend detoxification and MB 12." We have another dr appointment in a couple of weeks, so he can go over them with us.....It should be fun!"

May 28, 2009: 2nd repayment installment received. Amount was $64.67; it was 4 days early.

October 1, 2009: This loan has been fully repaid!

October 1, 2009: All lenders have been repaid their original loan amounts via PayPal. (Except lender Karyn who had an email change. I am tracking her down!)

October 2, 2009: This family is considered to be in good standing on Lend4Health and is eligible to request another loan in the future, if they wish.

October 5, 2009: Update from Jodene: "Jaden is doing awesome! Thanks so much to you and Lend4Health for my loan. I don't know if we would have done the crucial testing without it. Because of our loan, we were able to find out about food sensitivities and Metobolic profile. I have tailored his diet to fit the results and we have treated and added suppliments where needed. I have seen some amazing things recently. Jaden recently learned how to ride his 3 wheel bike...Yay, this was a huge milestone and is so exciting. He is saying words and requesting things more and sleeping alot better. Another amazing thing is that he learned the alphabet....YESTERDAY...Yes, in just one day! Jaden is now also able to count to 10 outloud and using his fingers. Biomedically, our next step is to work on the methalyation cycle with our DAN doctor. Thanks again for everything!"

Make a Microloan for 4-yr old Alec's Health!

This loan has been paid back in full!

Alec enjoying some GFCF [gluten-free, casein-free] cake at his sister's birthday.

First Posted On: February 15, 2009

Name: Alec S.

Age: 4 years old

Diagnosis: Autism, mild

Loan Sought: $500 [reduced from original amnt. of $871]

Loan Needed For: A variety of needs: (1) Follow-up appointment with Dr. Margot Weinberg in Pittsford, NY (an Integrative Pediatrician who has some DAN! training): $100; (2) Comprehensive Diagnostic Stool Analysis test: $125; (3) April DAN! conference registration ($65/day rate x 3 days): $195; (4) Bulk GFCF food order on Amazon.com: $60 -- organic Tinkyada pasta & GFCF animal cookies (used for therapy sessions as ABA reward!); and (5) a supplement we'd like to add: CoQ10, $20.

Repayment Terms: 18 months (~ $27.78/month)

Other Notes: Alec's mom, Christina, writes, "Alec was diagnosed with Autism in September 2007, before turning 3 years old. Right after we received his diagnosis, Jenny McCarthy was on Oprah, and that sparked my curiosity about what I could do to unlock my son from his "fog." From that point, I have been on a quest to recover him. Switching him to a GFCF [gluten-free casein-free] diet saved his digestive system, and lifted the brain fog/opiate effect. Family, friends, and therapists all saw the drastic changes in him, within weeks. With the help of some "mentor moms," I started this diet and then moved on to supplements. Cod Liver Oil (CLO) gave Alec his motor skill. A year of therapy could not do what CLO did in less than a week! As we have added other supplements, we have seen more improvement! We are full-time-working parents, and are really stretching it with the budget. We have had to slow down with many of his supplements, and the special diet food has become harder to afford. Most of all, there is testing that I really would like to see run on him to uncover what his underlying issues are. A testament to Alec's recovery can best be summed up with this: when his little sister Dayna was born, he didn't even know she was in the house. We started biomedical interventions when she was 5 months old. Today, Dayna has brought out the best in Alec, and it's a joy to see them play together."

Special Note: Christina is the Founder and Chair of DANIA (Dietary and Natural Interventions for Autism). She says, "My biomedical journey with Alec inspired me to form a local support group (DANIA) in the Central New York area. There are many parents using biomedical interventions, but no one was getting together for support. It started up in July 2008, and with the help of some dedicated volunteers, has become a great source of information and support. We meet on a bi-weekly basis and often have guest speakers from the community. It feels so good to spread the knowledge!" Christina also blogs about her experiences on "Our Healing Journey of Autism Spectrum." [read it HERE]

I want to extend our family's deepest gratitude for how you all came together to help Alec! Thanks again for providing the ability to continue supplements, testing, and doctor guidance that we otherwise would have to put on our already over-extended credit cards...

June 29, 2009: Update from April:

Hi Tori and Lend4Health family,

A lot of changes both good and bad since we first took our loan with Lend4Health.

What was a difficult financial situation has turned into a crisis. My account is still overdrawn there's no work or money coming in and it's been a stressful situation on us all.

My husband has been transferred and we are now in the process of relocating which means new school, new regional center, etc. I'm excited about the new school but change is always a bit scary.

As for my kiddo, when we first started using DAN [Defeat Autism Now] protocol he was experiencing a great deal of stress. He was aggressive, self injurous, and he appeared to be regressing. We've made quite a few changes in his program, both in regards to his therapy and his bio-medical intervention. As a result we've seen improvement. After a heavy dose of yeast treatments (that we are still doing) he stopped banging his head, stopped biting, and language has begun coming back. In addition to the bio-medical changes we have switched from an ABA [applied behavior analysis] to a RDI [relationship development intervention] program at home, and at school they hired a consultant to help deal with his aggression. All of these have contributed to the changes as well. I am convinced, however, that the head banging was a result of something internal related to yeast which we are now attacking heavily. He also seems more aware, open, and is initiating play with us like we've never seen before. He's sleeping in his own bed, potty training, and swallowing pills on his own. As of the last few days we've taken a supplement hiatus due to a bout of diarrhea but will continue slowly once the stomach problems begin to subside.

Overall he's just a delight these days, and I feel so fortunate that your generous loans enabled us to buy his yeast treatments (among other supplements) that have all contributed to this new change.

I hope everyone else is doing well and we will keep you posted.

Thanks again for your support,
April
