Make a Microloan for 37-year old Ben's Health!

This loan has been repaid in full!

Photo: Ben smiling in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber.

First Posted: July 3, 2010

Name: Ben

Age: 37 years old

Location: Ohio, USA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $1,200

Loan Needed For: Rental of a hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber.

Repayment Terms: 24 monthly payments ($50/month)

Other Notes: Ben's mom, Karen, writes, "Ben is 37 years old and has a 2-year-old comprehension. At the present time he does not talk. He was first diagnosed with brain damage and seizures at 11 months of age. We believe the initial cause was the series of the DPT shots at 3, 6 and 9 months (seizures started at 9 months). Looking back, the seizures and autism grew worse with each immunization shot. He was hospitalized with the first Asthma attack at 18 months shortly after he received the MMR shot. At 14 years of age, he received the series hepatitis B shots, after which he became aggressive.

When Ben was born, Autism’s ratio was 1 in 10,000 and now it is something like 1 in 150! He wasn't officially diagnosed with Autism until he was 20 years old, even though we mentioned it to doctors when he was young. Ben was also diagnosed with Colitis 3 years ago that causes him to have chronic constipation and severe stomach pain.

When Ben is having a good day, he smiles and giggles a lot, and when he is happy it brings us great joy. He loves playing ball and going for walks. His memory is amazing. When he is having pain in his body, the only way he knows how to react is by being aggressive or biting his hand. Not being able to tell us what is wrong must be difficult for him, and it is extremely hard for us to determine how we can help.

We have started the hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) treatments and are noticing more cognitive awareness and interaction with us. The HBOT started to heal the callus on Ben’s hand but when he bit it again the skin broke. In the past when we tried to bandage his hand he would immediately take it off but this time he didn't even try to take it off! He holds his hand out and allows us to put a bandage on him (without someone else holding his other hand down) and will keep it on most times for hours or even over night. Angie from Dr. Demio's office [from whom we rented the chamber], said that was very significant because cognitively he was able to realize the bandage helped him. Ben is also taking our arm and leading us to what he wants a lot more. All of this is very exciting!

HBOT is expensive but with prayer and God’s direction we believe it could improve Ben’s quality of life. Many conditions including Autism and Colitis can improve from HBOT therapy because it decreases inflammation. Reducing inflammation helps aid in the healing process. We believe in miracles and that it is God’s will to heal Ben. Mal 4:2 But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings. Thank you for your support!"

Special Note: Ben's mom sells nutrition/vitamin products online to help cover the costs of Ben's treatment. She invites everybody to visit her website as an additional way to help the family pay for Ben's HBOT. Click HERE to go to her products site.

We have tried a lot of things but nothing big has happened. When he is not in pain, he is very happy. Hoping to do a colonic with him. I will do one first to see what it is like. I have heard a lot of good things about them and his main issues are gut related. Disappointed that we didn't see better results with the Hyperbaric treatments but do feel they had to have helped, and he probably needs so much more because he is an adult. I don't know if we will do HBOT again. Our focus has been trying to keep him in our home because the State is fighting against giving 24-hour care for him. Then once we get that, we have to find the right people. We will get there. I haven't given up yet."

Thank you note from Ben's mom, Karen:
"Dear Lend4Health Friends, we would like to thank you for your support by lending finances for our son Ben to receive H-Bot treatments. We have seen some steady improvements with him cognitively over the past year. I shared before how he allows us to put a bandage or bandaid on his hand without immediately tearing it off and recently he allowed us to put gloves on him. It was very exciting because in the past he would quickly take them off. Yesterday he wore them for two hours after he came inside! He also has been giving us way more eye contact, lots and lots of hugs with giggles. He gives lots of interaction while tossing balls. He is doing more things on his own instead of waiting for us to do it for him. For example, one of Ben’s favorite toys is a yellow shape sorter. Once he has finished putting all the shapes in the container he now takes the lid off, dumps the shapes out then puts the lid back on so he can do it again. I know this sounds really simple but we are rejoicing in the little things that he has never done before. I believe Ben understands more of what we say and he is responding in a very positive way. Another cute thing he is doing when we play a "pick up his toys" game. We sit his toy bin in front of him and he helps put the balls and toys away. When he comes to a toy he likes he sits it beside him on the couch so he can play with it later. Before long he has several sitting beside him. It is really neat to see him pick and choose which ones he wants to put away and which ones he wants to keep beside him. We are very excited because he has not shown this kind of awareness before. Thank you so much again for believing in us and allowing us to borrow the finances for his treatments. We hope we will be able to get Ben additional H-Bot treatments again someday. Thank you for making this possible! God bless you all abundantly. Happy New Year!
Karen, Vince and Ben"

Make a Microloan for 6-yr old Jaden C.'s Health!

This loan has been repaid!

First Posted: March 17, 2010

Name: Jaden C.

Age: 6 years old

Location: Florida, USA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $2,720

Loan Needed For: 40 "dives" in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at her doctor's office

Repayment Terms: 24 months ($113.33/month)

Other Notes: Jaden's mom Bonnie writes, "Jaden is a delightful, fun, mysterious girl who was diagnosed with severe autism at 26 months. She has made much progress with biomedical treatment in the past four years. She talks, sings, learns and loves people. She loves to have people over to our house and help me set up the table! She recently began homeschooling, and it is a joy to learn along with her. She can be taken everywhere now -- library, church, stores, field trips, rides in the car, overnight trips, which she loves! Her gut is nearly healed. Her vitamin deficiencies are almost gone. She struggles still with OCD- [obsessive compulsive disorder] type behaviors (pacing, picking lips and skin), some sensory issues and mild anxiety. HBOT [hyperbaric oxygen therapy] is one of the therapies we have been unable to do and I am praying that it will be one of the answers to Jaden's breakthrough. Thank you for considering having a part in that! God bless you today and always!"

Special Notes: Bonnie is a long-time Lend4Health lender & supporter.

Make a Microloan for 7-yr old Lila's Health!

This loan is past-due.

Photo has been removed at parent's request.

First Posted On: July 27, 2009

Name: Lila

Age: 7 years old

Location: California, USA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $3,000

Loan Needed For: 20 HBOT [hyperbaric oxygen therapy] dives

Repayment Terms: 18 months ($166.67/month).

Other Notes: Lila's mom writes, "Lila is an amazing 7 year old girl with autism presenting classically (DSM 299.00). She was diagnosed in Fall of 2005 at the age of two and a half and has been hard at work getting better since then. She follows DAN [Defeat Autism Now] protocol, is GFCF [gluten-free, casein-free], and has overcome challenges to gut, immune, and metabolic dysfunction that made her early entry into recovery pretty rocky. Lila has improved to a point where HBOT [hyperbaric oxygen therapy] is her last treatment we hope to yield some results that can get her over her sensory seeking behaviors, physical out-of-control-ness, and better her chances for social connection with peers. Lila has worked so hard to this point and has made some remarkable gains, and we feel she deserves the chance to recover. We believe the HBOT in addition to her 45 hours of weekly therapies including speech, occupational therapy, and behavior will further unlock her access to recovery!

For two years I have tried to raise the money for HBOT dives for Lila, but other medical/financial concerns have made it impossible for us to start the important protocol.

Lila needs HBOT now. We are seeking a $3,000 loan to get her started, and will take the dives though Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic of Santa Monica, a vendor experienced in HBOT for autistic children. Help Lila exceed the limit she has hit in her recovery by lending toward this important treatment today!"

Dear Friends and Lenders:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the incredible generosity and caring you all have outpoured for my daughter Lila in loaning her the money to begin Hbot treatment here in California!

For years I have dreamed of being able to get her started with this after seeing our friends experience some incredible results with this therapy. It remains to be seen how Lila will respond, but we will post a video update if the results are good and we plan to move forward with more dives.

All of you, from the moms, to the friends, to the business people, receive a huge standing ovation from Lila and I and again thank you from the bottom of our hearts for investing in Lila's health! And Thank you to Tori for having Lend4Health!!!

Make a Microloan for 4-yr old Jonah's Health!

This loan closed early, without being funded. Please read below for more details.

First Posted On: August 7, 2008

Name: Jonah

Age: 4 years old

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $2,500

Loan Needed For: To see Dr. Krigsman (a GI specialist) at Thoughtful House in Austin, Texas. The loan will be used for travel, a pill camera GI exam, evaluation, medications, and approximate fees for one year.

Repayment Terms: Loan repayment will begin in 5 years (2013) and will finish in no more than 10 years (2018). [Note from Lend4Health: Lenders for Jonah should understand the special risks involved with making this loan.]

Other Notes: "Jonah has had success with past treatments (DAN, diet, supplements, homeopathy)," his mom said. "But now I need to determine why all these interventions have not helped his chronic diarrhea and rashes. I do not have money to pursue this treatment that I started to pursue for Jonah. I also have a 3-year old daughter."

UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE
October 15, 2008: In close communication with Jonah's mom, Cynthia, we have decided to put Jonah's loan "on hold." Cynthia is unable to pursue any new biomedical interventions for Jonah at the moment. When she gets to a more predictable stage of her journey, I will work with her to figure out a new loan amount and repayment schedule based on Jonah's needs and Cynthia's situation at that time. I will be contacting all the lenders so far to give them an option of (1) getting their loan back now or (2) keeping their loan "on the books" for a future loan to Jonah. Thank you for your understanding.

December 20, 2009: Cynthia has requested that her loan request be removed permanently due to her current life circumstances. She appreciates deeply the generosity of her lenders and has requested that they roll over their loans to another Lend4Health family. All lenders have been notified via email and have been asked to respond with information on how they would like to proceed (withdraw their funds or roll over to another child). Jonah's lenders have a deadline of December 31, 2009, to respond to this request. If no response is received, the lender's loan will be rolled over to another Lend4Health family, and this loan request will be closed on January 1, 2010.

January 1, 2010: This loan has been closed.
