Make a Microloan for 37-year old Ben's Health!

This loan is being repaid!

Photo: Ben smiling in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber.

First Posted: July 3, 2010

Name: Ben

Age: 37 years old

Location: Ohio, USA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $1,200

Loan Needed For: Rental of a hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber.

Repayment Terms: 24 monthly payments ($50/month)

Other Notes: Ben's mom, Karen, writes, "Ben is 37 years old and has a 2-year-old comprehension. At the present time he does not talk. He was first diagnosed with brain damage and seizures at 11 months of age. We believe the initial cause was the series of the DPT shots at 3, 6 and 9 months (seizures started at 9 months). Looking back, the seizures and autism grew worse with each immunization shot. He was hospitalized with the first Asthma attack at 18 months shortly after he received the MMR shot. At 14 years of age, he received the series hepatitis B shots, after which he became aggressive.

When Ben was born, Autism’s ratio was 1 in 10,000 and now it is something like 1 in 150! He wasn't officially diagnosed with Autism until he was 20 years old, even though we mentioned it to doctors when he was young. Ben was also diagnosed with Colitis 3 years ago that causes him to have chronic constipation and severe stomach pain.

When Ben is having a good day, he smiles and giggles a lot, and when he is happy it brings us great joy. He loves playing ball and going for walks. His memory is amazing. When he is having pain in his body, the only way he knows how to react is by being aggressive or biting his hand. Not being able to tell us what is wrong must be difficult for him, and it is extremely hard for us to determine how we can help.

We have started the hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) treatments and are noticing more cognitive awareness and interaction with us. The HBOT started to heal the callus on Ben’s hand but when he bit it again the skin broke. In the past when we tried to bandage his hand he would immediately take it off but this time he didn't even try to take it off! He holds his hand out and allows us to put a bandage on him (without someone else holding his other hand down) and will keep it on most times for hours or even over night. Angie from Dr. Demio's office [from whom we rented the chamber], said that was very significant because cognitively he was able to realize the bandage helped him. Ben is also taking our arm and leading us to what he wants a lot more. All of this is very exciting!

HBOT is expensive but with prayer and God’s direction we believe it could improve Ben’s quality of life. Many conditions including Autism and Colitis can improve from HBOT therapy because it decreases inflammation. Reducing inflammation helps aid in the healing process. We believe in miracles and that it is God’s will to heal Ben. Mal 4:2 But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings. Thank you for your support!"

Special Note: Ben's mom sells nutrition/vitamin products online to help cover the costs of Ben's treatment. She invites everybody to visit her website as an additional way to help the family pay for Ben's HBOT. Click HERE to go to her products site.

July 19, 2011: Update from Karen: "Ben is up and down. We found out he has had kidney stones probably since at least last year when all of the behaviors started again. We have tried a lot of things but nothing big has happened. When he is not in pain, he is very happy. Hoping to do a colonic with him. I will do one first to see what it is like. I have heard a lot of good things about them and his main issues are gut related. Disappointed that we didn't see better results with the Hyperbaric treatments but do feel they had to have helped, and he probably needs so much more because he is an adult. I don't know if we will do HBOT again. Our focus has been trying to keep him in our home because the State is fighting against giving 24-hour care for him. Then once we get that, we have to find the right people. We will get there. I haven't given up yet."

August 8, 2011: 7th repayment of $50 (due August 15) received, early.

September 7, 2011: 8th repayment of $50 (due September 15) received, early.

Make a Microloan for 2-yr old Aaron's Health!

This loan has been repaid in full!

First Posted: October 1, 2010

Name: Aaron

Age: 2 years old

Location: Michigan, USA

Diagnosis: Dyspraxia

Loan Sought: $300

Loan Needed For: Initial appointment with DAN doctor

Repayment Terms: 3 monthly payments ($100/month)

Other Notes: Aaron's mom, Laura, writes, "Aaron is our third child and the only boy. He has two older sisters (Ava 6 and Ana 4). Aaron just turned 2 years old and is the best little boy I know. We knew something was up between ages 15-18 months. At that time he had a few words he would use regularly and spontaneously and after a round of illnesses and ear infections we noticed marked regression. He became inward and aggressive and stopped playing with his favorite toys and stopped any imaginative play he knew. We began a very limited diet with him as he seems to have the same food intolerances as his sisters, and that has brought back his charming character. Recently, he has seen a pediatric neurologist to rule out seizure disorders and genetic abnormalities to give his developmental apraxia of speech a reason. So far the OAT test she ran came back grossly abnormal, and he has 3 metabolic genetic abnormalities. His "normal" doctors have no idea how to deal with this and have pretty much left us on our own. He has many of the physical ailments autistic children have (as do my daughters), but I believe we have spared them through diet and EFA supplements. For Aaron, I have my concerns because he is a boy, he is not talking (but wants to!), and he is falling off his growth curve (he has not gained any weight in one year and is down to the 5th % for weight and 15% for height). So I thought our DAN! doctor might be able to bring Aaron to a full functioning 2 year old before more symptoms get added to the dyspraxia. He is currently in speech therapy and we are hopeful it will work.

We could really benefit from this loan because my husband has been laid off from work for 2 years and just recently got hired as a local driver for a local company. He is working full time but for minimum wage. And we are trying to catch up for being without any income for 3 months. I am currently in school but this will end in September. At that time, I hope to focus on getting Aaron where he needs to be. (speech doctor appts and cooking the foods that he needs on any special diets)."

Make a Microloan for 6-yr old Julian's Health!

This loan has been repaid in full!

First Posted On: August 26, 2010

Name: Julian S.

Age: 6 years old

Location: Nevada, USA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $500

Loan Needed For: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT); 20 dives.

Repayment Terms: 9 months ($55.56/month)

Other Notes: Julian's mom, Rachel, writes, "Julian always has a smile on his face. He loves music and works hard everyday, he is my sunshine. He was "officially" diagnosed with autism at the age of 4, (although at age 2 we were told of him having autism) and since then we have been pursuing biomedical treatments. He has speech, occupational therapy weekly (during school as well) ABA therapy in home, takes vitamins/supplements daily, and is on a gluten-free,casein-free, soy free, egg & nut free diet.

This summer Julian has been working very hard for his ABA therapists who visit our home. He has made great progress in his language and has learned to write his phone number (with the area code), first and last name, and his address along with other huge milestones he's reached. It's exciting for us to see this. It's a mother's longing to see all of this in our children and celebrate it with him. He is doing great so far.

For the past 2 years we've been wanting to pursue hyperbaric oxygen therapy, but we have done the other therapies first as financially we just couldn't do. I am excited at where Julian is at this time, and HBOT, we believe, would benefit him greatly.

We are a previous Lend4Health family and know that if it hadn't have been for great lenders like you, we probably still wouldn't have been able to get a DAN Dr. and pursue biomedical treatments for Julian.

Thank you in advance for all of your support; it is much appreciated!"

Special Note: This is Julian's 2nd Lend4Health loan request. The first loan was $471 for Julian's first DAN! doctor appointment. That loan was repaid early, and this family is in good standing on Lend4Health. To read the first loan request, click HERE.

We are doing daily treatments and he even asks every morning when he gets out of bed, "Are we going in spaceship mom?" Calling it a "spaceship" has made it fun for him to want to get in, and, since day one, he has had no problem getting in it at all. He has been having spontaneous language and so far we are happy with his progress. We are about halfway thru our treatments. I'm happy to share that Thurs. 30th Sept.

Make a Microloan for 7-yr old Benny's Health!

This loan has been funded and disbursed!!

First Posted: August 7, 2009

Name: Benny

Age: 7 years old

Location: Quebec, CANADA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $2,000

Loan Needed For: Partial payment of 40 HBOT [hyperbaric oxygen therapy] dives at Clinique Magali.

Repayment Terms: One lump sum, paid 24 months after loan is fulfilled.

Other Notes: Benny's mom, Lidia, writes, "I have worked hard to document the many gains that my son had using the HBOT before (click HERE). It has helped his recovery. I am hoping that he can complete another 40 dives.

This journey has been a difficult one and has depleted me financially but I have my son back and there is no price tag for that.

I want to be able to complete 40 more HBOT dives. I have $1,100 and need an extra $2,000. There is a chance that another organization can fund the remaining $3,000.

Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity."

Special Notes: Lidia has worked hard, in coordination with Benny's therapy team, to document the gains they have noticed over time from his past HBOT dives. This is a long, but very informative, list, so I have posted it on a separate web page as a Google document. To read more about Benny's gains from past HBOT dives, please CLICK HERE.

Check out some of Benny's artwork. Lidia says, "Remember I said the HBOT brought my son's skills back? This is his artwork. Isn't it beautiful?!"

August 25, 2010: Loan of $2,003 (USD) disbursed directly to Clinique Magali in Quebec. This loan is scheduled to be repaid in one lump-sum by September 1, 2012.

August 25, 2010: Update from Lidia: "Benny started hyperbarics yesterday at Clinique Magali. The total cost is about $5,000. I had some saved up, plus this loan will pay for a portion of it. He will have about 40 dives. At first he didn't like it yesterday, but later when we were in the car, he was asking to go back. I have already noticed improvements. He slept really well last night, and it was the first time in about 6 months that he did not wet his bed. He also has been calmer today than usual, and he is forming some longer sentences than usual."

Make a Microloan for 7-yr old Milo's Health!

This loan has been fully funded, but it has not been disbursed because the family cannot be reached.

First Posted: August 7, 2009

Name: Milo

Age: 7 years old

Location: Oregon, USA

Diagnosis: Autism

Loan Sought: $1,500

Loan Needed For: Partial payment of 40 HBOT [hyperbaric oxygen treatment] dives at California Hyperbarics.

Repayment Terms: 18 months ($83.33/month)

Other Notes: Milo's mom, Kathy, writes, "Milo is a fabulous seven year old. He loves to build, play with his friends, and is currently in a general education classroom in kindergarten. Milo has come a long way since his original diagnosis as "low functioning autism." We believe that Milo is on his way to recovery and the HBOT [hyperbaric oxygen treatment] is a major contributor to that recovery. We are requesting a loan in the amount of $1,500. We want to take Milo to California Hyberbarics for 40 HBOT dives (total cost of $4,500). This loan will help us pay for a portion of the full amount needed. Last summer Milo did 40 dives and we saw tremendous results. He gained language, social skills, and was more cognizant. Milo will benefit tremendously from more dives this year!!! He knows that HBOT helps him and has repeatedly asked to 'Go back to the chamber.' We would like to repeat the protocol this year but, being a family with limited financial resources (like many many families with children on the spectrum), we need help."

Special Notes: (1) Kathy learned about Lend4Health from Autism Free Zone. (2) Milo's doctor is Dr. John Green at The Evergreen Center.
