Other Notes: At the end of October, Faustin's mom, Maureen, wrote the following to me (at that point, Faustin had just started the gluten-free, casein-free diet): "Faustin is a beautiful, loving child. He suffers from many developmental disabilities that haven't been diagnoses as one disorder, yet, but sensory modulation, auditory processing disorder, and autism have all been mentioned as possibilities. Faustin has speech therapy (ST), physical therapy (PT), AND occupational therapy (OT) multiple times a week. He loves cheese, so it's breaking our heart to take it from him, but the [gluten-free, casein-free] diet seems to be helping. Yesterday, he shook his head "no" in response to a question. He has never done that before. He kisses on the lips now...also a new development. He's just our sweet boy and we hope to have any and all resources available to continue improving his prognosis."
Two months later (December 2008), Maureen provided this update: "Faustin had his first DAN! [Defeat Autism Now!] doctor appointment on November 21st! He's doing really well with this combo of therapy and supplements and the GFCF diet(more than two months!) and it's neat to hear new words and see increased eye contact. When I get home from work, he jumps off his chair to hug me, and tonight, when I went to play rehearsal, he cried at the window...He never seemed to realize/react to my coming and going until the past couple weeks...it's amazing."
Faustin's doctor is Dr. Elena Koles in Northbrook, Illinois. Faustin's dad has been unemployed for five months now due to the economy. He is in the TV/film industry, previously in Los Angeles where work was plentiful, and now in Chicago where it's harder to come by.
